Principia Weblogia

The question, as always, is how to begin a new blog. I should start, I suppose, with the main inspiration for “getting away from it all”: getting away from the walled communities and decorum of being friends with people you’ve either never met or talked to for five minutes at a party, and likely aren’t sure if you even like.

Don’t get me wrong, I have met many people online that I like quite well, and would at some point like to meet in the real world. But, as I defriended several people on Facebook yesterday that I had only ever met once, or people I haven’t talked to since high school but friended out of obligation, I realized that the social aspect of the Internet is not something that entirely appeals to me. Color me shy, I suppose, but with the exception of those people I would truly count as “friend” (both online and in real life) I’m really not all that interested in what you ate for lunch or that funny thing that happened at work today. Frankly, I’m not all that interested in telling you what I ate for lunch either, and I doubt you really want to know.

Mea culpa.

So, where does that leave me? Clearly, I’m still here writing. The urge to blog about things that interest me still exists, but I want to make those interests interesting to you as well. And now we’re back to my inspiration: Merlin Mann’s excellent blog entry “Better.” Read it. Do it now, then come back.

Done? Cool. “Better,” and Merlin’s subsequent reboot of 43 Folders have really connected with me (if that wasn’t obvious by the fact that I’m writing about it). I think it's absolutely fantastic that there’s someone out there finally encouraging the Web 2.0 world to cut the crap, stop worrying about the teal deer, and get busy making your work the best it can be. And, as creative jack of all trades, I occasionally need good swift kick in the pants to get my ass to the drawing table and actually produce something.

So, that’s where this blog comes from. A desire to not only write and write well about my interests and where they intersect with my life but also to make myself accountable to those who will listen. A desire to produce my best work in all of my creative pursuits. If you would like to come along for the ride, then you are more than welcome. If you’ve simply skipped to the end of this entry because it’s “tl;dr,” then perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be.
